Who are we?
The Institutional Center for Scientific Research (ICSR) was established in 2013 as an initiative of Dr. Cynthia García Coll, a professor in the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program and the associate director of ICSR at Albizu University’s San Juan campus. Dr. García Coll is a graduate of Harvard University and a professor and leading researcher in education, pediatrics, and psychology.
Dr. Arthur Cantos serves as the director of ICSR, which in turn directs the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program at the San Juan campus. Dr. Cantos has over 30 years of experience in clinical and academic practice. He earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and additional advanced degrees at the University of London and the University of Valencia in Spain. His research has focused on issues related to domestic violence, and he has published on the mistreatment of children, parenting styles, and dating violence.
Dr. Arthur Cantos
Dr. Steven L. Proctor is a senior research professor and directs the ICSR at the Miami campus. He received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Louisiana State University. He completed his pre-doctoral clinical internship at the Metropolitan Detention Center in the Federal Bureau of Prisons system in Los Angeles, California, and his postdoctoral fellowship at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, where he received specialized training in the Addictive Disorders Treatment Program. Dr. Proctor’s line of research broadly focuses on the evaluation of addictions assessment procedures, diagnostic criteria, instruments, and treatment outcomes. He has an extensive publication record, including numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in these areas, and frequently presents the findings from his work at local, regional, and national professional meetings.
More than 30 faculty members from the Miami and San Juan campuses of Albizu University collaborate with Dr. Cantos and the associate directors on ICSR activities. The research specializations of the faculty cover a wide range of areas, including autism, childhood bullying, depression, sexuality and sexual abuse in children, developmental disorders, obesity, suicide, HIV, substance abuse, gerontology, health psychology, religion and spirituality, psychometrics in the elderly, Alzheimer’s Disease, workplace bullying, and job satisfaction.
What do we do?
ICSR is focused on investigating, creating, and disseminating knowledge as an integral part of Albizu University.
The Center has three main purposes:
- Support research efforts at Albizu University and increase the number of student, faculty, and alumni publications
- Disseminate and promote ICSR’s research to the academic community, professional associations, and mass media, both traditional and digital
- Create a culture at Albizu University in which research constitutes an integral part of the teaching/learning process, positioning the institution as a leader in the creation and dissemination of knowledge
ICSR also serves as a center for disseminating information on research funding available from local and federal agencies, foundations, and educational institutions.
Our Facilities
ICSR is supported by students and faculty members engaged in the development of scientific research. Students collaborating in the research center at the San Juan campus are Ariadna Aldarondo, Alessandra Landrau, Kiara Acevedo, Christian J. González, Ibelis Buzzetta, and Reina Serrano.
Our facilities on the San Juan and Miami campuses are equipped with computers with the statistical programs required to analyze scientific data. The facilities are available to any active Albizu University student involved in a scientific investigation.
