Program Overview
The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program at Albizu University, Miami campus, trains students to become professionally and culturally competent clinical psychologists and behavioral researchers. A special emphasis is placed on training students from minority groups that have been underrepresented in the field, particularly Hispanics.
The program is based on a scientific approach to human behavior and is carried out through a balanced and interconnected sequence of didactic offerings, research and clinical opportunities, and experiential training. With a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, graduates are ready to rise to the challenge of designing and conducting research in human behavior and providing clinical services to an increasingly complex and diverse world.
While the Ph.D. program also prepares students to become licensed practitioners, its primary focus is in training students to become behavioral researchers capable of conducting independent studies with high impact in the community. For applicants who are primarily interested in becoming clinicians, our APA-accredited Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program may be a better choice of training.
Albizu University was founded on the premise that the needs of a multicultural society are best served by professionals who are culturally competent and inclusive. In accordance with this mission, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program provides students with a rich exposure to culturally and individually diverse populations in their academic training and applied clinical research.
Program Highlights
The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology program is a new course of study launched at Albizu University in the fall of 2015. We are actively seeking American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation. Given the new APA standards of accreditation, it is possible that the program can become accredited before it graduates the first cohort of students. APA accreditation widens the choice of employment opportunities for graduates and is required in many states to secure an internship or apply to become a licensed clinical psychologist.
The Ph.D. program consists of 109 credits. It follows the scientist-practitioner model of training, which aims to provide psychologists with a foundation in research and in evidence-based scientific practice. Within this framework, students are trained in conducting empirical research, applying scientific methodology to clinical practice and decision-making, and evaluating and treating clients using evidence-based methods, tools, and techniques.
Students work with a highly committed, diverse group of faculty with expertise in a variety of areas of behavioral research. Our faculty members are scientists and scholars as well as practitioners. They bring to the classroom a wealth of knowledge from their experiences working in their laboratories and clinics and in the community. Program activities take place in small, personalized groups, providing students withhands-on clinical and research experience and direct interaction with peers and faculty. Students have the opportunity to provide clinical services to the culturally diverse population of South Florida at over 40 different external practicum sites in the community, including hospitals, prisons, and mental health centers, among others.
Career Opportunities
Program graduates are expected to find employment in a wide range of areas, including research, treatment, testing, assessment, supervision, and consultation. Graduates will be qualified to work in research centers, academic departments, government agencies, community clinics, hospitals, and prisons, as well as in private practice.
The field of psychology has a promising job outlook. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for psychologists is expected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, a rate that is much faster than the average for all occupations.
