Program Overview

The mission of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology Program Psychology at Albizu University, San Juan Campus, is to train culturally sensitive psychologists in a Hispanic/Latino cultural context who can master the required clinical and research skills to investigate mental health issues, particularly those associated with disadvantaged populations. Our educational philosophy is based on a holistic, dynamic and integrated perspective, which is carried out through a balanced and interconnected sequence of didactic offerings, research opportunities, and experiential training placements. The Albizu University’s Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology subscribes to the scientist-practitioner model of training.  Based on this model, you will be trained in the application of scientific methodology to clinical practice and decision-making, how to evaluate and treat clients using evidence-based methods, tools, and techniques, how practice and approaches to clinical problems are informed by science, and how to conduct practice-based research.

This is a key feature not only for the prestige and employment opportunities it brings our graduates, but is also required in many states to secure internship and afterwards allows you to become a licensed clinical psychologist.

We pride ourselves on small, personalized classroom settings that allow you the hands-on experience and direct participation and interaction with peers and faculty. Our students boast about the accessibility and availability of our faculty in helping them navigate the rewards and challenges consistent with any graduate career. We infuse diversity into all our courses and clinical experiences. We work with over 25 different external practicum sites in the community and are proud to be a strong presence in the San Juan area.

As a graduate of the Albizu University‘s Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology Program you will be immediately eligible for licensure in Puerto Rico. You will also be eligible for licensure in the United States upon completion of a required one year of post-doctoral training.

Career Opportunities

The Albizu University’s  Ph.D. graduates go on to secure gainful employment, with our most recent alumni survey showing 90% of respondents working within the field. Once our students become psychologists they work in a wide range of specialty areas, including research, treatment, testing, assessment, supervision, and consultation. The majority of our graduates are employed in private practice, medical centers, universities, research centers, community agencies,   and the military. The field of psychology has a promising job outlook. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), employment for psychologists is expected to grow 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.
