Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Program Overview

The objective of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology Program at Albizu University, San Juan Campus, is to train you to integrate theory and practice in the area of industrial organizational psychology and to contribute to the enhancement of human performance and quality of life in organizational contexts.

Our PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology Program follows the scientific-practitioner model, training professionals who produce knowledge through scientific research and base their interventions on this scientific evidence.  Based on this model, our program is designed to educate you in evidence based knowledge as well as to train you in issues of organizational diversity and to contributing to scientific knowledge in the field.

Program Highlights

As a student in the Albizu University’s Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology Program you will have the opportunity to acquire the following competencies:

  • the knowledge and skills for applying the scientific method
  • skills in selecting and applying different research designs and statistical analysis pertinent to workplace situations,
  • theoretical knowledge and skills in test development, adaptation, and validation
  • effective oral and written communication of research procedures, results, and implications
  • effective communication of a theoretical analysis or literature review of a problem related to the discipline.

As a student of our I/O Program, you  will also learn the importance of developing respect for and  protection of research participants’ rights, as well as intellectual honesty in the discussion of research results.

At the Albizu University’s I/O Psychology Program, you will be trained by a highly committed, diverse faculty with expertise in the areas they teach. Our faculty members are academicians, as well as practitioners, that will bring to your classes their real life experiences in the field, thus enriching your learning experience while in the Program

The Program has two full time faculty members recognized by their contributions to our discipline in Puerto Rico and who are also strongly committed to research: Dr. Miguel E. Martinez (Full Professor and Program Director) and Dr. José A. Pérez (Associate Professor). These faculty members participate in national and international meetings presenting the results of their research projects and also publish regularly in different peer review journals.

As a graduate of the Albizu University’s Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology Program you will be eligible for licensure in Puerto Rico.

Career Opportunities

As a graduate of our Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial /Organizational Psychology Program, you will be able to pursue employment in an array of work settings, whether public or private, as internal or external consultants in various areas. These include: organizational design and development, job analysis and design, recruitment and selection, compensation, work environments, work-life balance, stress management, coaching and mentoring program and employee assistance programs. Some positions are at the managerial level (supervisor, manager   or director, vice-president) and non-managerial level such as talent management, human capital, recruitment training, employee relations, human resources, and organizational development and change. Others work in colleges and universities as researchers and/or professors , preparing future professionals in the field.
