Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Speech and Language Therapy

Program Overview

The objective of the Bachelor of Science in Speech/Language Therapy at Albizu University is to train you to work with children with communication disorders as defined by Puerto Rico Law #77. This profession encompasses a range of specialty areas including prevention and treatment of communication disorders in children from 0-21 years.

The Program combines both the theoretical knowledge and applied skills necessary for the solution of communication problems. This will allow you to develop an appreciation for the worth and dignity of all people regardless of their background, origin, and life circumstances.

Our program is designed for working adults and requires that you transfer the equivalent of an associate degree in arts or science.

Program Highlights

As a student of Albizu University’ s Bachelor of Science in Speech/Language Therapy Program, you will have the opportunity to be trained in the prevention and intervention of communication disorders of children.

Our program integrates academic learning and practicum experiences to help you to acquire the competencies needed to work with special populations with different conditions such as: mental retardation, learning disabilities, autism, reading and writing impairments, voice and fluency disorders, hearing impairments and articulatory and phonological disorders among others. In our Bachelor of Science in Speech/ Language Therapy Program you will taught by a highly specialized group of faculty who are also practitioners with vast experience in clinical supervision in diverse settings.

As a AU’s Bachelor of Science in Speech/Language student you will have the opportunity to work in small group settings which allows for hands on experience and direct interaction with peers and faculty.

Albizu University’s Speech/Language Pathology Program has a network of over 50 practicum sites in the community which will provide you with the opportunity to be trained in multiple settings with different client populations.

Career Opportunities

Graduates from Albizu University Bachelor of Science in Speech/Language Therapy Program are employed in an array of different settings including schools, early intervention programs, and hospitals, with the majority being employed by government agencies such as the Department of Education and the Puerto Rico Health Department. Others continue their studies at the graduate level in various fields with the asset of having the knowledge and understanding of how communication disorders impact human behavior.

Between 2009 and 2012, the average employment rates of Albizu Speech/Language Therapy Program graduates have been over 90%. According to the statistics provided by the Department of Education (2012), the field of Speech/Language Therapy has a promising job outlook due to the shortage of professionals to serve the increasing population of children with communication disorders in Puerto Rico.
