Program Overview

The Certificate in Science Education (Grades 5 through 9) is designed for students planning to teach in this field and for current teachers in other fields preparing for a career change.

Program Highlights

Courses are held in classrooms equipped with modern scientific resources and equipment and conducted by professors with theoretical and practical expertise in scientific methods, providing students with a solid academic background in science education. The program places a special emphasis on acquiring the skills to work with culturally diverse populations in middle school.

The certificate program consists of 20 credits of coursework, including two laboratory sessions. Courses are taught in a hybrid format.

The curriculum for the certificate is as follows: Biology I (BSC 300), Biology I Laboratory (BSCL300L), Biology II (BSC301), General Chemistry I (CHM102), General Chemistry I Laboratory (CHM102L), General Chemistry II (CHM103), Physics (PHY300), and Applied Earth Science with Laboratory (BSC302).

Career Opportunities

The program meets the coursework requirements to apply to take the Florida Department of Education examination for certification in Middle Grades General Science (Grades 5-9).
