While many countries cover the cost of health care for their citizens, individuals in the United States are responsible for paying for those expenses themselves. A good insurance policy protects you from the high costs of health care in the United States and enables you to seek treatment at the medical facility of your choice. Insurance policies also typically cover the cost of transporting you back to your home country for treatment if that is determined to be medically necessary.
The U.S. Department of State has not set specific insurance requirements for F-1 or F-2 visa holders. Instead, schools determine the coverage that is needed, based on medical costs in the part of the country where the school is located and the services available at the school itself.
While you are attending Albizu University, you will be responsible for obtaining and paying for medical insurance that meets all of the following criteria for yourself and any dependents traveling with you:
1. Continuous coverage for the full course of your program
2. Medical coverage of $50,000 per illness or injury
3. A deductible (that is, the amount you might be expected to contribute toward the treatment) that does not exceed $500 per illness or injury
4. Repatriation coverage of $7,500 (in the unlikely event that it is necessary to return remains to your home country)
5. Medical evacuation coverage of $10,000 (if a primary care physician determines that it is medically necessary for a patient to be transported back to his/her home country, accompanied by an escort)
Once you find an insurance company that meets the requirements above, please ask the company’s representative to complete the Albizu University International Student Health Insurance Compliance Form and return it to us.
The form must be returned along with proof of your insurance coverage (such as a copy of the policy) prior to the registration date for the first semester of your program or, if applicable, the first semester of your I-20 extension.
