The Department of Homeland Security permits an F-1 student who is unable to complete all academic requirements by the end date on the I-20 to apply for an extension if the following conditions apply:

  • the student has continually maintained F-1 status, including making satisfactory progress toward the completion of the program
  • the delay is caused by a compelling academic or medical reason, such as a change of major or research topic, unexpected research problems, or a documented illness

Extension requests will not be granted due to delays caused solely by employment such as Curricular Practical Training. In addition, delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not considered acceptable reasons for an extension.

If you would like to apply for an extension, you must submit an I-20 Extension Request Form to your PDSO no later than 45 days before the end date on your current I-20. If you fail to meet the deadline, there is no guarantee that your request will be processed before your current I-20 expires. This could result in the loss of your student status and may obligate you to return to your home country.

The following documents must accompany your request for an I-20 extension:

  • A completed Academic Advisor Recommendation Form
  • A completed Affidavit of Financial Support and/or Affidavit of Financial Sponsorship, along with the supporting documents listed on the affidavit form(s)
  • A copy of your passport, which must be valid for at least the next 6 months
  • A print-out of your electronic I-94 or copy of your paper I-94
  • A copy of your current I-20

Please note that if you are approved for an I-20 extension, you must submit a completed International Student Health Insurance Compliance Form along with proof of your insurance coverage (such as a copy of the policy) prior to the registration date for the first semester of your extension.
